The new season 2014/2015 began for Marcos Freitas exactly like the last season has ended: with a huge success! The 26-year old Portuguese won the Czech Open in Olomouc and was able to celebrate several premieres.
The highest ranked WSA athlete (ITTF No. 13 - August 2014) was not only the first winner of an "ITTF World Tour Major Series" event which was played with the new plastic ball, it was the very first title in a competition of this category for Freitas.
Marcos Freitas also ended two losing streaks with this tournament: on one hand, a 0:2 Head to Head against his semifinal opponent Koki Niwa of Japan, and on the other hand a previously winless record (0:4) against the finalist Patrick Baum. In addition to the close 12:10 win in the final set against the German, he was also turning the match at the semifinals against Koki Niwa: Marcos Freitas managed to come back from 0:3 games down into a 4:3 victory.
The Madeiren (Funchal) earned $ 9,000 USD prize money and already won his third big title in 2014: The victory at DHS Europe Cup in Lausanne followed the ETTU Champions League crown with his French club AS Pontoise Cergy and now the title in the Czech Republic.
The team of the Werner Schlager Academy congratulates Marcos Freitas to this great victory!
